Caterpillar New Industrial Power Units to Streamline OEM Engineering

Caterpillar Introduces New Industrial Power Units to Streamline OEM Engineering and Assembly Processes

Caterpillar’s latest offerings, the Cat C2.8 and Cat 3.6 industrial diesel power units (IPUs), provide off-highway OEMs with a cost-effective solution for applications requiring power in the range of 74-134 hp. These IPUs are designed to comply with EU Stage V and Tier IV Final emissions standards, ensuring both performance and environmental sustainability while reducing engineering and assembly costs for manufacturers.

Caterpillar is introducing two advanced industrial diesel power units (IPUs) designed to provide high efficiency and cost savings for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the construction, material-handling, and other off-highway sectors. These IPUs, ranging from 74 to 134 hp, not only help OEMs reduce engineering and assembly costs but also meet the stringent emissions standards required in regulated markets.

The Cat C2.8 and Cat 3.6 IPUs are now readily available through Cat dealers in North America. These IPUs come fully equipped with a range of features, including factory-installed ECM sensors, radiators, cooling packs, filtration systems, control systems, and aftertreatment hardware.

The newly introduced IPUs comply with various emissions standards, including EU Stage V, U.S. EPA Tier IV Final, China Non-road IV, Korea Stage V, and Japan 2014. This expanded range of power solutions now allows Caterpillar to offer IPUs spanning from 48 to 950 hp, catering to the emissions requirements of highly regulated markets.

Steve Ferguson, Senior Vice President of Caterpillar Industrial Power Systems, emphasized the benefits of Cat IPUs for OEMs with limited engineering resources. He highlighted that these new plug-and-play solutions provide design flexibility, high power density, emissions compliance, and proven durability. By offering an integrated package, these IPUs can assist off-highway manufacturers in expediting their time to market, enabling them to meet their project timelines more efficiently.

Advanced Engineering, Outstanding Performance

The new Cat C2.8 and Cat 3.6 IPUs have been ingeniously designed to cater to the needs of off-highway equipment owners. These IPUs boast advanced features, including a common rail direct-injection design and a turbocharged air system with either the C2.8 or C3.6 being turbocharged aftercooled. Such innovative designs ensure optimal performance and efficiency for a wide range of off-highway applications.

The IPU is equipped with an integrated ECM and aftertreatment hardware, specifically designed to withstand challenging work conditions. The fuel filter is also tested and validated for reliable performance in such environments. Additionally, a new wiring harness has been developed, enabling a straightforward connection to the machine’s wiring system. For efficient and convenient installation, an optional engine control panel is offered, providing engine monitoring capabilities and speed control.

To ensure minimal regeneration downtime, every IPU is outfitted with an on-engine diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF). In addition, the Cat C3.6 model features selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology. To meet the demands of challenging work environments, the IPUs can be equipped with heavy-duty cooling packs that include a pusher fan and an erosion screen. They also come with heavy-duty fuel filters that have enhanced dirt-holding capacities.

Cat IPUs provide customers with the flexibility to utilize renewable liquid fuels like 100 percent hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). They are also equipped with Cat Digital Services, a comprehensive suite of reliable software and hardware solutions that offer valuable insights for equipment owners. This enables them to make informed decisions in real-time, ensure the health of their equipment, and minimize unproductive downtime.

The global Cat dealer network provides full support for all Cat power solutions, offering genuine Cat parts and services through Customer Value Agreements (CVAs). Dealer technicians are extensively trained to deliver a wide range of maintenance and services, empowering customers to maximize the performance of their Cat industrial engines and optimize the total cost of ownership.
